Family Friends

Families bond when they’re having fun and in Whittlesea you will be spoiled for choice when it comes to working out what to do with your brood. From tiny tots to teenagers, to those who are still kids on the inside, we have exactly what you need to create your next family memory.

Extreme fun for the little ones

At Tunzafun Extreme in Plenty Valley your kids will be entertained for hours. Enjoy the arcade games, climbing walls, laser tag and a 9D theatre. Perfect for parties or indoor sessions, this play centre won’t disappoint. Challenge someone to a game of air hockey, test yourself on the racing games and see how you cope with the 3D rollercoaster. Of course, just up the road, Funfields has rides and water slide fun for kids of all ages when the season commences.

Outdoor playgrounds are also abundant in Whittlesea. The newest one in Donnybrook is the Gumnut Playground, inspired by the Aussie picturebook favourites, the gumnut babies (by May Gibbs). In this natural bush setting, you’ll find mega slides, flying foxes, toddler areas and spaces for children of all abilities to explore. Bring a picnic or pop into The Shared Cup for a snack, a meal or a drink. For bigger kids, check out one of the BMX and skate parks at Laurimar, Epping or Bundoora.

Hang out in nature

When the kids have had enough screen time, get them outdoors for some good old fashioned countryside activities. Go horse riding through the bush with Uncle Nev’s Trail Rides, cycle on the Darebin Creek trail or teach them how to play golf at the Growling Frog Golf Course.

Check out the walking tracks around Yan Yean Reservoir Park and learn about the wetlands and the bush around the area. Take the whole gang up to Kinglake National Park for a hike or a cross country mountain bike ride.

Pretty Places for Picnics

Family picnics are what memories are made of. Luckily, Whittlesea has dozens of gorgeous sites for you to set up a blanket and have a meal. Pick up some treats from one of the many local bakeries (Turners, Heather Brae Shortbreads, One Way Lebanese Bakery) or pick up some cheese at That’s Amore as you head to see a waterfall or tackle a mountain trail.

Yarrambat Park is also great for a picnic or BBQ with extended family. There’s over 48 hectares for everyone to spread out and run around. The lake in the park offers a few great fishing spots too so it’s perfect for teaching the little ones how to drop a line in.

Have a look at the interactive map on this site to discover even more amazing picnics sites, parks and playgrounds in the area.

Fabulous family food in Whittlesea

Nothing beats a large family gathering around a table laden with delicious food. Head out to share a Vietnamese meal and order a pho or some rice paper rolls at Linh Linh in South Morang. If Chinese is more to your taste, reserve a huge table and order the special duck deal at Northern Delicious at Uni Hill.

If you have a hankering for mediterranean food, Gyros from The Greek Grill of High offers rustic, authentic Greek food. If Lebanese is more your style, try the pastries, pizzas, dips and desserts at Zait.

When it comes to keeping kids happy, you can never go wrong with the extensive array of sweet and savoury pancakes from the Pancake Parlour at Westfield in Plenty Valley. Go for the full meal of chicken schnitzel with a potato pancake or just have whipped cream, or lemon and sugar crepes for dessert.
